Grammar Focus

When we talk about people’s professions, we use a/an with singular:

She’s a doctor               He’s an actor                       You’re a student

We don’t use a/an when we are talking about 2 or more people (plural):

They are doctors             We are actors             John and Mary are students

A or AN?

Use a before consonant sounds.

Use an before vowel sounds.

a housekeeper, a writer, a professor

an actress, an architect, an engineer
